The XPhone will be a smartphone that can log in to computers with the X Window System and do local functions such as telephone calls or downloading music; all these at the same time. So it is smartphone and mobile X Terminal in One. Thus, with keyboard and trackball like on a computer, you can learn to operate a computer that has a UNIX/Linux-type OS, no matter if you can afford one or not.

In the second stage of project schedule an Open ICA-Client may be implemented so that it can connect to Windows terminal servers too, thus being usable not only in the third, but also in the First world.

First it is seen as a social and educational non-profit project, for use at schools and universities; for example people who go to school may log in to the server at the school. But on a long view, it is possible that it will give profit, because the XPhone will surpass other smartphones such as Apple's iPhone 3G by far, and also the Blackberry smartphones: I don't know whether you can log in to a Windows Terminal server with them, but you cannot log in to a UNIX/Linux type system with them, and seen this way, they are already obsolete.

Das XPhone soll ein Smartphone werden, welches sich bei Computern mit X Window System einloggen können und lokale Funktionen ausführen können, wie etwa Telefonieren oder Musikdownloads, alles zur gleichen Zeit. So gesehen ist es Smartphone und mobiles X-Terminal in Einem. Somit kann man lernen, einen Computer mit einem UNIX/Linux-artigen System zu bedienen, ganz egal ob man sich einen solchen leisten kann oder nicht.

Im zweiten Stadium des Projekts könnte ein Open ICA-Client implementiert werden, wodurch das Gerät sich auch an Windows Terminalservern einloggen kann, und somit außer in der Dritten auch in der Ersten Welt brauchbar ist.

Es wird in erster Linie als non-profit Projekt gesehen in den Bereichen Schule und Universität und im sozialen Bereich, z.B. können sich Schüler am Server ihrer Schule einloggen. Auf lange Sicht könnte es aber gewinnbringend werden, weil das XPhone andere Smartphones wie z.B. Apple's iPhone 3G bei weitem übertreffen wird, oder auch die Blackberry-Handys: mir ist unbekannt, ob man sich diesen an einem Windows-Terminalserver einloggen kann; an einem UNIX/Linux-artigen System geht es jedenfalls nicht, und so gesehen sind auch diese bereits veraltet.

Maybe the name XPhone already has been registered as a trademark, because Websites
www.XPhone.de, www.XPhone.com, and www.XPhone.org
all exist. But they have nothing in common with this project here, and they have nothing to do with free software, as far as I know; so a new project name is necessary.
Preliminary name may be OpenXPhone.

My idea is that the OpenXPhone will be developed on base of OpenMoko's FreeRunner; the other possibility is on base of the Nokia N95 8GB, because this has the ARM9 architecture, and it is likely that EmDebian will run on it.

Similar to the "Blackberry" phones, but far superior to them, the OpenXPhone will close the gap between the smartphones and the so called sub-notebooks or Ultra Mobile PCs.

Der Autor dieser Zeilen wünscht, dass eine internationale Organisation sich entwickeln wird, welche das Projekt XPhone verwirklicht.

Der Name XPhone könnte bereits als Markenname registriert sein, denn die Websites
www.XPhone.de, www.XPhone.com, und www.XPhone.org
existieren bereits alle. So weit ich weiß, haben diese nichts gemeinsam mit dem Projekt, welches hier auf dieser Seite beschrieben ist, und nichts zu tun mit freier Software; daher wird ein anderer Name des Projekts notwendig sein.
Vorläufiger Name könnte sein: OpenXPhone.

Meine Idee ist, dass das OpenXPhone auf der Grundlage von OpenMoko's FreeRunner entwickelt wird, die andere Möglichkeit ist, es zu entwickeln auf der Grundlage des Nokia N95 8GB, denn dieses hat die Architektur ARM9, und es ist wahrscheinlich, dass EmDebian darauf läuft.

Ähnlich wie die "Blackberry" Smartphones, diesen jedoch weit überlegen, wird das OpenXPhone die Lücke ausfüllen zwischen den Smartphones und den so genannten Subnotebooks, auch genannt Ultra Mobile PCs.

1st year: Begin of Software development on the OpenMoko FreeRunner

2nd year: Designing of hardware and beginning production

3rd year: Developing an OpenICA Client and inserting it into the OpenXPhone

Through this, logging in to Windows Terminal servers will become possible, and the device will be interesting for the rich coutries too.

• 1 Mio. EUR or approx. 1.5 Mio. US $ for software development
• 1 Mio. EUR or approx. 1.5 Mio. US $ for hardware development
• 1 Mio. EUR or approx. 1.5 Mio. US $ for production of the first 1000 pcs.

Projekt-Zeitplan:

1. Jahr: Beginn der Softwareentwicklung auf dem OpenMoko FreeRunner

3. Jahr: Entwicklung eines OpenICA Clients und Einführen desselben in das OpenXPhone

... dadurch wird das Einloggen an M$ Windows Servern möglich, und somit wird das Gerät auch für die reichen Länder interessant.
